Short version: every Varenni vehicle carries a toll tag, so you can use any Brisbane toll road without arranging anything. What you use during the hire is added to your account afterwards.
1. The seven tolled roads
South East Queensland has seven toll roads. Every other road you are likely to drive — the Pacific Motorway, the Bruce Highway, the Western Freeway, Coronation Drive, the lot — is free.
- AirportlinkM7 — the tunnel between the inner north and Brisbane Airport.
- Clem7 — the north–south tunnel under the river, Bowen Hills to Woolloongabba.
- Legacy Way — Toowong to Kelvin Grove. This is the one closest to us.
- Go Between Bridge — the short river crossing between Milton and West End.
- Gateway Motorway — the eastern bypass and the Gateway Bridge.
- Logan Motorway — the southern east–west link.
- Toowoomba Bypass — west of Brisbane, on the way to Toowoomba.
2. How tolls work in Queensland
All of them are fully electronic. There are no booths, no gates and no way to pay cash at the road. You drive through at normal speed and an overhead gantry records either the tag in the windscreen or the number plate.
Prices differ by road and by vehicle class, and they are reviewed periodically, so the current figure for any given road lives on the Linkt site rather than here — we would rather point you at the live number than publish one that goes stale.
3. What this means on a Varenni hire
Nothing to arrange. The tag is already in the car, so you are free to take Legacy Way to the airport or the Gateway up to the Sunshine Coast without thinking about it. The tolls you actually use during your hire are passed on to you afterwards — you pay for the roads you drove on, and nothing for the ones you didn't.
You do not need to open a Linkt account, buy a visitor pass, or set anything up in advance. If you are visiting from overseas, that is one less piece of admin on arrival.
4. If you would rather not use them
You can drive almost anywhere in Brisbane without touching a toll road, and your phone's maps app will do it for you — look for the "avoid tolls" setting in the route options. The trade-off is usually time rather than distance: Legacy Way and the Clem7 exist because the surface alternatives are slow.
From our Indooroopilly motor house, the city, the western suburbs, the Gold Coast run down the M1 and most of the airport trip can all be done toll-free if you prefer.
5. Fines and infringements
Tolls and fines are different things. A toll is a road charge. An infringement is a penalty notice from an issuing authority — a speed camera, a parking officer, a toll-road notice where travel was not paid.
Traffic, parking and toll-road infringements incurred during your rental period are your responsibility. Where an issuing authority sends a notice to Varenni as the registered operator, we pass the fine on and may charge a reasonable, disclosed administration fee for identifying the driver and processing the notice. That is clause 18 of the rental agreement, and it is worth reading before you sign it.
Frequently asked questions
Do Varenni hire cars have a toll tag?
Yes. Every Varenni hire vehicle carries a Linkt toll tag, so you can drive any South East Queensland toll road without setting anything up. Tolls used during your hire are passed on to you afterwards.
Which roads in Brisbane are tolled?
Seven: AirportlinkM7, Clem7, Legacy Way, the Go Between Bridge, the Gateway Motorway, the Logan Motorway and the Toowoomba Bypass. Everything else in and around Brisbane is free.
Can I pay a Brisbane toll in cash?
No. Queensland toll roads are fully electronic — there are no cash booths and no gates. Your travel is recorded by the tag or by your number plate as you pass.
What happens if I avoid the toll roads entirely?
Nothing is charged. The tag only records travel on a tolled road, so if your trip never touches one there is no toll on your account.
Do I need my own Linkt account for a hire car?
No. Because the vehicle already travels on a tag, you do not need to open an account or buy a visitor pass for your hire.
